Two new schools upgraded

Having completed major building programmes at Unawatuna Maha Vidyalaya(UMV) and Sri Gunerathane Maha Vidyalaya(SGV), Senahasa is working with two further schools in the Galle District. A number of smaller schools in the area are in desperate need of help.

New building at Tittagalla School

Tittagala School is close to one of the new pre-schools that Senahasa is building on temple land. The school has 110 children and goes from grade 1 - grade 8. Twenty six childdren at the school were badly affected by the Tsunami and a more are expected to come to the school once a nearby Tsunami housing project is complete. The school would also like to offer children the opportunity to study to Grade 9 locally rather than travel long distances. The exisitng school buildings are over-crowded, old and damaged and are not suitable to house the additional children who are expected. Senahasa has built a new single-storey (80' x 20') to house four class rooms and has refurbished another badly damaged buiding. It is now safe to use. To see the new work go to school project

New building in progress at Mihiripenna School

Mihiripenna School is about 10 km from Galle and now has over 320 children. It is an old school, originally built in 1889. The numbers have gone up 45% since the Tsunami as Mihiripenna has taken in children form other schools destroyed by the Tsunami. The school offers children schooling from Grade 1-10. Twelve students lost a parent in the Tsunami and many others lost their homes and family income. Many of the families are dependant on fishing and casual labour.

Senahasa has begun an extensive programme of work to upgrade the facilities at these schools. Work has begun on a two-storey 90' x 25' building to house 4 classrooms and an assembly hall. A class hall is to be partitioned to create four distinct classrooms and the other old buildings are to be refurbished. The grounds are water-logged during the monsoon rains and so work has begun to to level them, put in drainage and tar some areas. New toilet facilities are also being built..
